The District Football Association of Maseru President Lijane Nthunya has been elected the new President of the Lesotho Football Association during the Association’s XXTH Congress held at Bambatha Tšita Sport Arena on Saturday.
The DIFA Maseru President won 27 of the 52 votes to oust Advocate Salemane Phafane, who had been in charge of the Association since taking over the reins from the late Thabo Makakole.
The LeFA Congress was graced by FIFA and CAF observers as well as the Lesotho Sports and Recreational Commission (LSRC) and the Lesotho National Olympic Committee (LNOC).
Speaking after his election, the incoming President admitted that he was overwhelmed with the support and love received from the football leadership that elected him as their new president.
“Truly speaking, this has touched me. I’m overwhelmed with the amount of love and support shown in me by the football leaders in this country. It shows that you have trust in me from what I presented to you during my visits to your constituencies,” the new LeFA President said.
“I would like to say to all of you here today, God has blessed us with the skills and knowledge to take football in Lesotho to a different level if we work together.”
The incoming President stated that the football leadership in the country was divided leading to the Congress, but his plea is for all of them to put everything behind and start afresh for the betterment of football in Lesotho.
“I know in the buildup to the congress, we were divided but I plead with you my leaders to put it all behind us and work towards the betterment of football in our country,” Nthunya said.
“Let’s work together, let’s roll our sleeves and work together for the betterment of our game because we have potential, but what we lack is working together.
“You can all hear that as I talk about this, I get emotional because we have indeed humiliated each other at the expense of the game, let’s forget all those things and work for the betterment of the game,” he said.
