The Three-day workshop held in Maseru was attended by safety and security personnel from elite clubs, Premier League Management Committee as well as LeFA.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the opening session, National Stadium Security Officer (NSSO) and Head of Security at LEFA, Mr. Moeketsi Khamali, said the purpose of the CAF Safe Stadiums Initiative Workshop is to ensure that all activities taking place at football stadiums run smoothly and that security operations are fully effective.<\/p>\n
The workshop, which was the first of its kind in the country is part of CAF\u2019s efforts to standardize safety measures and prevent stadium related tragedies in the continent.<\/p>\n
LeFA President Lijane Nthunya speaking during the opening ceremony, stated that the Association continues to address safety and security risks that could lead to tragedies such as overcrowding, structural failures and violence.<\/p>\n
The LeFA Chief noted that that while Lesotho has never experienced football stadium tragedies like the ones that have befell countries like Ghana and South Africa during derbies involving the likes of Asante Kotoko vs Hearts of Oak as well the Ellis Park disaster during the Soweto derby, it’s important for Lesotho to strengthen preventatives measures.<\/p>\n
He pleaded with participants to immediately begin implementing improved safety protocols in the ongoing league season in the elite leagues of Lesotho.<\/p>\n
He further said that after completing the course, he expects participants to approach security planning with a fresh perspective and to collaborate with CAF experts in Mr. Josua Andries Hoebeb and Xolile Nokuthula, who led the workshop in Lesotho.<\/p>\n
Head of Safety and Security at CAF, Dr Christian Emeruwa, revealed that the CAF Safety and Security department was established in 2019, to develop system that will improve safety stadiums at football events across Africa.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the challenges at the time was lack of coordination in safety operations during CAF competitions, which led to the development of the first CAF Safety and Security Regulations used to guide stadium safety standards across the continent,\u201d Dr Emeruwa said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur responsibilities during tournaments include conducting inspections of airports, training venues, hotels and stadiums facilities to ensure they comply with the require standards.\u201d<\/p>\n
The CAF Safety and Security Chief stated that the football mother body has prioritized capacity building across the continent, which since 2019, has trained more than 1129 safety and security officers and they are now rolling out the CAF Safet Stadium Initiative by training at least 40 safety officers in each of their member Associations.<\/p>\n
