Caswell Moru begins tenure as New LeFA Technical director
The Lesotho Football Association has appointed Caswell Moru as the new Technical Director taking over the reins from veteran coach Lehlohonolo Thotanyana.
Moru, who is a teacher by profession, has not only served the game as coach but is a former footballer, who during his playing days, donned the black and gold colours of Bantu FC, alongside the likes of Lehlohonolo Seema and Letsoha Khetsi.
He holds the CAF A License Coaching badge and is also a certified Confederations of African Football (CAF) Coach Instructor.
His big breakthrough as a coach came in 2005 when he led Mafeteng High School to the then Copa Coca-Cola tournament final, where his side lost to the star-studded Life High School team that boasted names such as former Lesotho international like Ralekoti Mokhahlane and the late Sello “Scalo” Muso.
Though born and bred in Matšekheng, Mapoteng in the Berea District, Moru has made a name for himself in the South part of the country playing and coaching Premier League giants Bantu, who are the bitter rivals of his home team and the current Vodacom Premier League defending champions, Lioli FC.
He led A Matšo Matebele back into topflight football in 2009 as the head coach and won the Independence Top during the 2012/2013 season and has also had spells as the Technical Director and Head of Youth and Development teams at the Mafeteng based outfit.
His journey as a coach also includes spells working alongside the late Moses Maliehe as the assistant coach for both the senior national team, Likuena as well as the u-20 side, Makoanyane XI.
“I’m very happy and humbled to get this opportunity which I think has been presented by God to come and contribute as well as making a difference in the growth of football in my country,” Moru said.
“I appreciate the love and support that has been shown by the football fraternity, and it shows that they trust what the Lesotho Football Association has done with the appointment to serve the country.”
The Berea born coach stated that there are a lot of things he has learned during his time as a coach especially in his short stint as the Likuena assistant coach, where he was reminded of the importance of development in football.
“After that time working with the senior national team, I leant how important it is to get it right with the development of young players that is why my focus has always been on young talent,” Moru explained.
“If as a country we can’t get it right with the development of young talent, then it will be very difficult for us to succeed as a country and it’s the one area that I will put a lot of effort to make a difference.
“We have a programme called School Sport which I think when we talk about development, it’s another programme that is very important and luckily, I have been part of it for a very long time and I know all the challenges it has been facing,” he said.
Moru admitted that one area that needs immediate attention is that of coaches in the grassroots and youth level coaching without the right credentials to help in the development of young talent.
“We have a lot of coaches in the grassroots and youth level who are coaching without the coaching badges. It’s one area that we must rectify and make sure that all the coaches have been given the right knowledge on how to develop players properly,” he said.
“These are just a few of the many things that we must get right to fulfill our mandate starting from our grassroots programmes going upwards.”
