Lesotho open COSAFA campaign with victory over Mauritius
Lesotho opened their Group C campaign at the 2023 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup with a 2-0 victory over Mauritius at the King Zwelithini stadium on Friday.
Likuena, as the Lesotho national team is affectionately known, took the lead in the 15th as Neo Mokhachane connected with a through ball from Jane Thabantšo to punish Mauritius.
Mokhachane, who is playing in his first COSAFA Cup tournament dazzled in the midfield having been named in the starting line-up by coach Leslie Notsi.
His impressive displays on the day saw the 26-yea-old Bantu attacking midfielder bag the Man of the Match award at the end of the match.
The match headed to the half-time break with Lesotho still enjoying the 1-0 lead but could have extended the lead through veteran forward, Jane Thabantšo, who squandered two good scoring chances.
Motebang Sera came from the bench to secure the three points for Lesotho scoring the second goal in injury-time, where he showed his prowess in the final third of the pitch.
The Lesotho striker equalled legendary Tico-Tico Bucuane of Mozambique and is now two goals behind Eswatini’s Felix Badenhorst in the COSAFA Cup all-time leading goal-scoring charts.
